The United States Government has transmitted to the United Nations a check for $10,000,000 as payment of part of the U.S. contribution to the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees, it was reported here today. This brings the U.S. payments for this year to $30,000,000 of a total of $50,000,000 voted by Congress.
Sen. Paul H. Douglas this week-end told an Israel anniversary celebration here that he could see, ” no greater conciliatory force” to bring about Arab-Israel peace than if “the Jewish people of this country” would make contributions to the relief of Arab refugees. He said it would be a sound move “if, when the Jewish people get compensation from Germany and Austria, they make some restitution to the Arabs for the damages they have suffered.” The Illinois Senator added that if such a peace effort succeeds it would benefit not only Israel but all of western civilization.
Sen. Douglas lauded Israel for its “miraculous success in achieving political democracy” and assured the gathering of over 1,000 that Israel will receive continued U.S. aid. He said that American Jews “should not be concerned with irresponsible talk of double loyalties. “If there should ever be a conflict.” he said, “I know where the American Jews would line up. They would line up on the side of the United States of America.”
