A special squad of 100 policemen visited stores throughout the city today–the Feast of Ascension–to check whether they were closed in accordance with a by-law ordering all stores to close on Roman Catholic holidays.

The penalty for being open is a $40 fine or two months in jail. Jewish and Protestant organizations are strongly opposing the law. Seven large stores are challenging the legality of the law.
