The West German Federal Government will support the emigration this year of between 8,000 and 10,000 displaced persons now in Germany, it was announced here today. Each emigrant will receive $40 toward the cost of transportation.
It was also made known that the United Nations High Commission for Refugees has taken over the legal protection of all non-German refugees in the West German state. The issuance of special passports to stateless persons and non-German DP’s will begin soon.
The Federal Government has cautioned businessmen not to confuse present exports to Israel with the proposed exports under the reparations offer. Present exports are made on the basis of permits issued by the Allied High Commission in behalf of the Jewish Restitution Successor Organization. The warning was made in view of the fact that numerous inquiries have been received from German firms here regarding the possibility of exporting manufactured goods to Israel.
The Association for Christian-Jewish Cooperation held a special memorial service in Munich today on the occasion of the 13th anniversary of the murder of Walther Rathenau, former German Foreign Minister. Speakers called Rathenau “one of the most important Jewish citizens of Germany, who was a fighter for humanity and a victim of an inhuman crime.”
