The Canadian Jewish Congress urged the Canadian Government “to consider the mischief and danger” of the pro-Nazi laws passed recently in Austria at the expense of Jewish victims of Nazism, and to use its good offices with members of the Allied Council in Austria, requesting them to withhold their consent in order to prevent these laws from going into effect.
In a note to the Department of External Affairs in Ottawa, Michael Garber, vice-chairman of the national executive of the Canadian Jewish Congress, pointed out that the Austrian legislation rehabilitates war criminals while denying justice to their victims. “Such flagrant action cannot but shock all friends of freedom and justice. These laws offend all concepts of international morality,” the note said.
