Senator H. Alexander Smith, New Jersey Republican, told a meeting of New Jersey Zionist leaders, held at Sommerville, that he had opposed the McCarran Immigration Act and had voted to uphold President Truman’s veto because of the discriminatory features of the legislation. He said that “America must go on with the same principles of freedom on which we started and built this great country. Our position of world leadership make it incumbent that we here in America offer equal opportunities to all creeds.”
