President Vincent Auriol today telephoned Israel Ambassador Maurice Fischer to express his personal condolences on the death of President Weizmann. An official Foreign Office statement declared that “the Government of France joins the Government and people of Israel in mourning the death of President Weizmann.”

An emergency meeting of representatives of all major Jewish organizations in France called for the observance of a 30-day mourning period by the French Jewish community, to be capped by a mass meeting in Paris at the conclusion of the month. The meeting also called on Jews throughout the country to spend the hours of the Weizmann funeral in Israel in contemplation and prayer.
