A Torah was dedicated to the United Nations yesterday at the East Fifty-First Street Synagogue here. Rabbi David B. Kahane, spiritual leader of the congregation, said that the Torah was dedicated to the U.N. “because we firmly believe that the United Nations is attempting to actualize the principles of universal brotherhood.”
Speaking at the ceremony, Benjamin V. Cohen, Assistant Secretary General of the U.N., cited UNESCO as fostering ideas of brotherhood, peace and human understanding as taught by Judaism through the centuries. “There are no barriers in human relations,” he said, “that information, culture and reciprocal knowledge cannot erase.”
