Leaders of more Jewish communities in the Soviet part of Germany continued to find their way into West Berlin this week-end escaping from the Communist regime where anti-Jewish propaganda shows no sign of waning. Among 50 Jews who fled from East Germany to West Berlin yesterday were the leaders of the Jewish communities of Magdeburg and Eisenach.
The Communist authorities in East Germany have begun to “reorganize” the Jewish communities in the Soviet zone, it was reported today. New heads of Jewish communist institutions are being appointed, the report said. Some of them succeed the Jewish community leaders who found asylum in West Berlin last week, while others replace the heads of institutions who are suspected of being “pro-Zionist.”
Heinz Galinski, head of the Jewish community in West Berlin, issued an appeal during the week-end to world Jewry to aid the Jews from the Soviet zone who have found refuge in West Germany. The flow of Jewish refugees into West Berlin is presenting a problem to the Jewish community in view of the fact that many of the 400 Jews who escaped from East Germany are in need of assistance.
