West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer today wrote to Erich Lueth, founder of the “peace with Israel” campaign in Germany expressing satisfaction with the movement’s efforts to bring about better relations between the German and Jewish peoples. The Chancellor stressed that material reparations could not make up to the Jews what they had suffered and that therefore a movement such as this was valuable in creating better understanding among the German people of the problems of the Jews.

Dr. Theodor Heuss, president of the German Federal Republic, today awarded the Grand Cross of Merit, with star, to Dr. Max J. Friedlander, 85-year-old authority on Dutch and medieval art who fled Berlin in 1939 and now lives in Amsterdam.
