The Israel Parliament last night adopted an administrative budget of 216,330,000 pounds for the 1953-54 fiscal year. The budget had previously been approved by the Cabinet.
It provides for an increase of 48,000,000 pounds over last year’s 168,000,000 budget. The government hopes to derive the greatest portion of the increase from income taxes, which last year accounted for 30 percent of all government receipts. The security portion of the budget will be discussed at a closed meeting of the Knesset Finance Committee.
The government compulsory “loan” bill passed Tuesday night by Parliament is seen here as a compromise between the Mapai and General Zionists in the government. Originally the government presented a bill for 65,000,000 pounds and the centrists, then in the opposition, fought it. The current measure seeks to raise 45,000,000 pounds in an 18-year loan.
Covered by the provisions of the bill are land, buildings, building sites, certain categories of machinery and vehicles and some types of animals. Exempted from the provisions of the measure is the property of municipalities, the Jewish Agency, foreign missions and the United Nations.
