Amherst College Fraternity Suspended for Ignoring Non-aryan Ban

The Amherst College chapter of Phi Delta Theta fraternity was yesterday suspended from the national organization, apparently because the local group had pledged members of this year’s freshman class without regard to the national group’s constitutional ban on non-Aryan members.

The president of the Amherst chapter, commenting on the national group’s action, pointed out that the “Aryans only” provision was at variance with an Amherst College ruling prohibiting discrimination by campus groups. Several other Amherst fraternities have severed ties with national groups over the same issue.
