The 205,000 Jews of Canada have 186 congregations, of which 165 are Orthodox, 19 Conservative, and three Reform, according to a survey of aspects of Canadian Jewish life by the Canadian Jewish Congress. Fifty four of the congregations are in Montreal, 49 in Toronto and 83 in 62 other Jewish communities.
In the field of education the survey established, 87 percent of the Jewish children of school age receive their education in public schools in eight of Canada’s 10 provinces or in the Protestant schools in Quebec and Newfoundland. There are 92 Jewish schools – day schools and afternoon and Sunday classes – throughout the Dominion. About 8,400 boys and 5,000 girls attend the Jewish day schools and afternoon classes. They represent 61 percent of all Jewish boys of school age and 37 percent of all Jewish girls of school age.
The Canadian Jewish community, according to the survey, has a total budget of $1,700,000 for its educational institutions. Approximately one percent of the Jewish population in Canada depends on social welfare agencies financed by local Jewish welfare funds.
