American Zionists Join in Mourning Death of Senator Taft

The American Zionist Council, represent the Zionist groups in the United States, today joined the American nation ###ing the death of Senator Robert A. Taft who was considered a great friend o### Zionist movement. A statement issued by Louis Lipsky, chairman of the Co###.“Senator Taft was one of the early advocates of the restoration of Palese### the Jewish National Home. He believed that he was loyal to American ideals ### favoring the creation of an era of freedom for the long-depressed Jewish pe### the Promised Land. He never wavered from his faith in the justice of that ###.“He believed that international covenants should be kept and therefore ### protest against the Palestine White Paper of 1939, which he regarded as a b### the Mandate and of the Balfour Declaration.

“He was one of the most faithful leaders in American political life in su### the Jewish cause after World War II, and greatly aided in the creation of the ### of Israel and in support thereafter of all American efforts to aid Israel to ### the tens of thousands of refugees coming from all parts of the world and in ### dating the economy of the new State.

“The bi-partisan support of American policy on Israel was due in large ### to his consistent and courageous advocacy of fair dealing toward the State ### and its difficult problems. The Jewish people will long remember him as ### friend and as a statesman of high integrity.”

Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver said in a statement: “I shall forever be grate### privilege of having known him as a friend and for having received from him ### wisest of counsel and the greatest of help in the work of establishing the State### Israel, a cause which appealed so greatly to his fine sense of historic justice ### Jewish People will forever treasure his memory. It is with profound sorr### see the passing of a great and good man who will be sorely missed in these ### times.”
