The hope that an understanding between Germans and Jews may come in the new year was expressed here today in a New Year’s message issued to the German Jews by West German President Theodor Heuss.
In a similar message, Chancellor Konrad A denauer hoped that German Jews would enjoy in the coming year “many blessings.” He described the last year as one of “harmony and good neighborliness.”
Erich Ollenhauer, chairman of the German Social Democratic Party, called for a change among the German people so that surviving Jews in Germany might feel secure in the country. Erich Lueth, founder of the “peace with anti-Semitism, no matter how disguised, continues to corrode the fabric of our society.”
In the Charlottenburg district of West Berlin, the second largest synagogue in Germany will be rededicated this Rosh Hashanah. Partly destroyed by the Nazis in 1938, it has been rebuilt since.
