Trygve Lie, former Secretary General of the United Nations, will head a roster of prominent American and international figures who will address an emergency National Report Conference of the United Jewish Appeal October 10 and 11 in Cleveland, it was announced today by Joseph Holtzman of Detroit, chairman of the Conference and national cash chairman of the UJA.

Mr. Lie, who will address the opening session of the conference at the Statler Hotel Saturday evening, October 10, will speak on a program that also includes Israel Ambassador to the United States Abba S. Eban, Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver of Cleveland, and Edward M.M. Warburg, general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal. More than 750 Jewish leaders representing campaign cities throughout the country will assemble for the two-day sessions to consider special plans for accelerating the Appeal’s nationwide drive during the remaining months of the year.

The conference will also consider special reports dealing with a threatened downturn in Israel’s economy. These reports, bearing on the large body of unabsorbed immigrants, the gap between imports and exports and a burdensome foreign debt, will serve as background for further discussions and actions early in December when the communal leaders will meet again in New York to set the stage for the United Jewish Appeal’s campaign in 1954.
