Dr. Erich Mix, who was the Nazi Lord Mayor of Wiesbaden at the time that city’s beautiful synagogue went up in flames, has been re-elected to that post by the City Council. Not a single vote was cast in opposition to his candidacy.

Only a few years ago, a denazification court sentenced Dr. Mix as a “Nazi activist.” He was elected Thursday by 37 of the 60 City Councilmen, members of his Free Democratic Party and of the Christian Democratic Union. The 20 Social Democrats on the council cast blank ballots in an election deal in which they were given the vice mayoralty. No candidate stood against Dr. Mix.

Wiesbaden is both the capital of the State of Hesse and a famed resort city in which many international congresses are held. Two months ago, with an eye to potential. Jewish guests, the Christian Democrats and Social Democrats refused to accept the Mix candidacy on the grounds that “the sensibilities of our international clientele should be respected.”
