A court in Davenport, Iowa, yesterday sentenced Robert Milner, who confessed to pasting up anti-Semitic signs in Davenport and nearby Rock Island and Moline, Illinois, to 30 days in jail. The sentence was suspended.
Edward Reed Fields, another culprit who confessed to having pasted up similar signs in Rock Island, denied having had anything to do with the Davenport incident. The police in the Iowa city, lacking jurisdiction, released Fields. It is doubtful whether the Illinois authorities will attempt to extradite him since the offense is considered a misdemeanor.
The two were apprehended by the police of Davenport after the Chicago office of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation League supplied them with information on suspects who had been carrying on anti-Semitic propaganda in the area. The stickers were found pasted on Jewish-owned stores in the three cities February 20, just as the nation prepared to celebrate Brotherhood Week. The stickers read “This place owned by Jews” and “Anti-Jew Week February 21-28. “
