The Communist Party yesterday received 44 percent of all votes cast in the first municipal election in this all-Arab city in Israel and thus assured themselves of six of the 15 seats on the municipal council, it was revealed today when the tally was concluded.
A Catholic party was second, capturing three seats in the council, and a coalition of three Moslem slates gained four seats. The remaining two seats were divided between a Greek Orthodox party and one other Christian group. A surprisingly high 84 percent of the total 9, 000 eligible voters turned out for the elections.
The elections were quiet and a large number of Israeli police were assigned to polling places to assure order. Throughout the campaign, the dominant note in each party’s propaganda material was anti-Israel Government.
