The State Department today announced its stand on the current developments in the Arab-Israel situation in a statement in which it was emphasized that the United States Government will seek to strengthen the armistice control machinery of the United Nations.
The full text of the statement reads as follows:
“All of our efforts are directed to the ultimate goal of a peaceful adjustment of relations between the Arab states and Israel. Before the goal is reached both Israel and the Arab states will have to modify their present attitudes.
“The first step forward should be the renunciation of force as a means to attain political objectives and the substitution of cooperation by the parties among themselves and with the United Nations truce supervision organization in the context of their armistice obligations.
“Our objective during the current Security Council discussion is limited to bringing about such cooperation and to discovering means to strengthen the armistice control machinery of the United Nations. We believe the interests of all concerned will be served best by such a forward step.”
The statement was issued to the press by Henry Suydam, press officer of the State Department. Mr. Suydam declined to answer questions based on the statement, saying that he was not in a position to interpret it.
