The State Department has made official inquiries of the Spanish Government about the reported export of arms by Spain to Egypt and has expressed’ its concern that these exports might be contrary to the provisions of the American-Spanish military aid agreement, it was reported here today.

he report said that the State Department did not ask Spain to discontinue the exports, but has drawn Spain’s attention to the fact that the American-Spanish pact states that arms supplied to Spain should be used exclusively for the defense of Spain. Spain says the arms are of Spanish manufacture.

(The Times of London today said that it has been known for some time that Spain has been selling arms to Egypt, and that this “fits clearly” into the context of Gen. Franco’s attempts to identify himself with Arab aspirations.)
