Israel Ambassador Abba Eban yesterday completed a series of top-level discussions at the State Department with an hour-long discussion with Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, but declined to divulge details of the vital talks.
Mr. Eban, who leaves for Israel on Tuesday, stated he is now in a position to give his government “a clear picture of the Secretary’s thinking at this stage.” He said he would present “a complete account of these serious and important discussions.”
Mr. Eban said the sole subject pursued at yesterday’s meeting was Israel’s anxiety over repercussions on her security arising from recent developments in the Near East, especially with regard to the British withdrawal from the Suez zone. He added that he has now given the State Department a complete account of Israel’s views.
Earlier, Mr. Eban conferred with David Wainhouse, Assistant Secretary of State for United Nations Affairs. In this talk, it is believed, he discussed aspects pertaining to the United Nations of the British withdrawal from Suez, and the 1951 United Nations declaration demanding that Egypt open the Canal to shipping bound to and from Israel.
