The charge made by Vice President Richard M. Nixon in a statement last week that “political opponents” were responsible for the opposition to the Eisenhower Administration’s policy of granting arms to the Arab states was denied here by the American Zionist Committee for Public Affairs.
“This is not a Democratic matter,” a spokesman for the committee stated. He pointed out that among those who are opposing the granting of American arms to the Arabs are both Democrats and Republicans. The committee made known today that a total of 150 candidates for election to Congress, including both Democrats and Republicans, have signed personal pledges to oppose American arms aid to Arab states in the present circumstances. More such pledges are expected this week.
The American Council for Judaism, an anti-Zionist organization, issued a statement lauding President Eisenhower for his statement on the Near East last Wednesday evening at the American Jewish Tercentenary dinner in New York and charged Zionist groups with making the U.S. Middle East policy “a campaign issue.”
