The State Department is considering the issuance of a statement affirming the United States’ determination to do everything within its power to thwart aggression in the Middle East, the New York Times reported today from Washington.
The report said that consideration is being given to issuing such a statement as a result of complaints voiced by Israel and organizations in the United States friendly to Israel that Washington is assuming a one-sided position in the Middle East by planning to supply arms to the Arab countries, whereas no action has been taken on Israel’s request for arms, pending since 1952. (In Washington, official sources confirmed the Times report, but added that such consideration has been in process since 1952, when Israel asked military support.)
