The Israel Cabinet last night authorized Premier Monhe Sharett to negotiate with labor and management in the Haifa port area to end a strike which has paralyzed the new Kishon River port for the past week. At the same time, agents for two foreign ships waiting in the port to be unloaded, have threatened to apply to the Supreme Court for an order to end the strike and permit the unloading of the vessels.

The dispute broke out over the demand of the stevedore’s union of Haifa for sole jurisdiction over labor employed in loading and unloading vessels at Israel’s newest deep sea port, which adjoins Haifa Bay. The port concessionaires in the Kishon port zone insist on employing stevedores as they see fit. The Haifa Labor Council called a work stoppage at Kishon port a week ago to “prevent violence” between rival groups of longshoremen.
