The bill calling for a ban on shechita, Jewish ritual slaughter, in Britain will not be introduced in this session of Parliament because of pressing government measures which must pass through Commons before Parliament is dissolved. Elections for a new House of Commons are scheduled to be held May 26.
Jewish leaders, however, warned the community not to rejoice too soon. The last has not yet been heard of the measure, they said. At a meeting yesterday of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, it was noted that a similar bill could be introduced at a later date and the Jewish community must have its forces mobilized to fight it.
