The Asian-African conference at Bandung, Indonesia, closed last night with the adoption of a declaration supporting the rights of the “Arab peoples of Palestine” and urging a peaceful settlement of the Palestine question. The Arab delegations are reported pleased with the statement as adopted.
While the political and propaganda victory of the Arabs at the Bandung conference is not underestimated here, its importance is nevertheless not exaggerated. It is noted that the declaration adopted by the conference on Palestine is vague in its terms and open to various interpretations.
(In New York, the American Jewish Congress said that “the high moral pretensions of the leaders who called the Bandung conference were exposed by their failure to invite Israel, because of Arab threats to boycott the conference.” The statement was made by Judge Justine Wise Polier, AJC leader, addressing a luncheon attended by 600 members of the women’s division of the organization.)
