Nearly one-third of the French survivors of Nazi concentration camps have died since the end of the war and the death rate among survivors is alarmingly high, Prof. Gilbert Dreyfus, of the organization of former French deportees to the Oswiecim concentration camp, told a press conference here today.
Prof. Gilbert said that of 38, 000 survivors who returned to France, 12, 000 have died in the ten years since their return. This alarming death rate, he said, was attributable to the physical and psychological tortures they suffered during incarceration. He called for new social legislation to further assist the survivors, noting that despite the “generous social laws” now in existence, it was essential that “more consideration” be given the survivors.
