Former Nazis in Austria will be freed of all restrictions after the Austrian state treaty is ratified and the occupation troops are withdrawn, except that war criminals sentenced to prison will continue to serve their time, it was reported here today in informed circles.
The report followed a statement by Chancellor Julius Raab to the neo-Nazi League of independents that the government intends to draw a curtain over the past once the occupation troops leave Austria. After the Chancellor’s pledge, the League expressed a willingness to vote in Parliament for the state treaty. But, it underlined that it depends on the goodwill of the coalition government parties in the enforcement of certain provisions of the treaty which, according to the neo-Nazi groups, endanger internal peace and friendly relations with Germany.
