State Dept, Names Bieringer Consultant on Refugee Affairs

Walter Bieringer, past president of the United Service for New Americans, has been appointed as a consultant on refugee affairs to the State Department. The appointment is effective immediately. Mr. Bieringer is a former president of the Associated Jewish Philanthropies of Boston, and a leader in the Combined Jewish Appeal of Greater Boston.

A prominent figure in Boston civic and philanthropic affairs, Mr. Bieringer founded the Boston Committee for Refugees, later the Boston Service for New Americans, and played an important role in the merging of the U.S.N.A with HIAS. He served as chairman of the Massachusetts Committee on Displaced Persons since 1950. He is a trustee of Howard University in Washington.
