Israel informed the United Nations Security Council today of its insistence that the Strait of Tiran, the entrance to the Gulf of Akaba, is an international waterway and that Egypt’s blockade is illegal.

In a letter signed by Mordecai Kidron, deputy chairman of the Israel delegation to the UN, Israel stressed its position–stated in identical fashion two weeks ago by the Foreign Ministry–that it would make use of the strait under any and all circumstances it chose, despite Egyptian attempts to regulate traffic through the channel. The letter made no request for action of the Council.
