Dr. Dov Joseph. Minister for Development, rushed off to Heletz, site of Israel’s first oil well, today, reportedly to investigate the discovery of a major oil find in a still lower stratum of rock than the one in which the first well was found.

Reports reaching here from the Negev drilling site say that technicians and oil geologists on the site are “mad with joy”. Some reports state that the quantity of oil at the Heletz formation is now believed to be four times as great as originally thought when the first well was brought in late last month.

The Lapidoth oil company, which brought in the gusher, was understood today to have signed a contract with the Minister of Communications for transportation of crude oil from Heletz to Haifa where Israel’s refineries are located.
