Arab states have asked for more time to study the American-sponsored Jordan Valley water development project, Eric Johnston, President Eisenhower’s special envoy, is reported to have announced today in Cairo.

He added he had been informed that objections raised by the Arab states directly concerned–Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt–can be resolved in the near future. “At that time I hope it will be possible to proceed with the project,” he said. Israel had indicated agreement to the plan some time ago making reservations for slight modifications. Ambassador Johnston reached Israel today but refused to make any statements there.
