The Canadian Government does not intend to offer itself as a mediator between Israel and the Arab states, Lester B. Pearson, Canada’s Minister for External Affairs, declared here today at a luncheon tendered him by the United Nations Correspondents Association. “If we were asked to join such a mediating group, as part of the United Nations, we would have to think about it,” he added.

Mr. Pearson, who just returned from Egypt, where he conferred with Col. Abdel Camal Nasser, Egypt’s Premier, said that “the Middle East is the most dangerous, explosive area in the world today.” However, he emphasized that both the Israelis and the Arab states are conscious of the danger and are doing their best to avoid war. “Both sides want help in their efforts to avoid war and for that reason there is a good chance for settling that problem without war, “he stated.
