The expansion of a fund for the restoration of the Touro Synagogue of Newport, Rhode Island, the oldest synagogue building in the country, from $50,000 to $300,000, was announced here yesterday by the Touro Synagogue Restoration Committee.
The additional funds will be sought to create a park area in front of the structure, one of the finest examples of colonial architecture. A number of nearby buildings will be purchased by the committee. The synagogue was established as a National Historic Site in 1946.
