Declaring that Israel faces a grave defense crisis, Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett told a meeting of the national executive committee of the Israel Bond Organization today that “the security of Israel does not depend on arms alone” but also on industrial equipment and the capacity to produce on Israel’s soil the largest possible proportion of food which the country requires. Mr. Sharett is scheduled to fly to Israel Monday.

“It is essential,” Mr. Sharett said, “that the Israel bond campaign continue with the greatest possible vigor and effectiveness in order to meet the needs of Israel’s economic growth and development, rendered even more imperative by urgent considerations of our security in the present crisis. The people of Israel regard the Israel bond campaign as a vital source of investment capital.”

Reporting on the results of the Israel bond campaign, Dr. Joseph Schwartz, executive vice president of the Israel Bond organization, indicated that a considerable number of communities have this year already exceeded their total sales for 1954. He expressed confidence that results for 1955 would be substantially greater than last year.
