More than 40,000 persons attended the two Chanukah festivals arranged by the Israel Bond Organization in Madison Square Garden here, the first of which was held last week and the other last night. The festivals resulted in sales of $4,000,000 in Israel bonds.

Dr. Israel Goldstein, chairman of the festival committee, said today that the two festivals were “the greatest success” in the history of organized community activity on behalf of Israel. “It is unprecedented for any organization to have two completely sold-out celebrations in Madison Square Garden within a four-day period,” he pointed out.

Israel Labor Minister Golda Myerson, addressing the festival last night, said that the only real guarantee for peace in the Middle East “is to augment Israel’s military strength.” Joining Mrs. Myerson in calling for the shipment of arms to Israel, New York State Attorney General Jacob K. Javits warned that the United States “should avoid Great Britain’s policy in the Middle East.” He described this policy as one offering “only appeasement of the Munich variety.”
