The Labor Party’s “shadow cabinet,” its parliamentary leadership, conferred today on the shipment of British “surplus” weapons to Egypt and decided to demand a debate on the matter before Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden leaves for the United States, in three weeks, for talks with President Eisenhower.
The Labor Party committee expressed satisfaction that the government’s promised White Paper on arms shipments to the Middle East would be published before Parliament reconvenes January 24. It is believed here that if necessary, the Labor Party will seek a debate on the White Paper the day that Parliament reconvenes, which is also one day, before the Prime Minister sails for the United States. The government is loth to agree to such a schedule.
