A State Department spokesman today commented on the report that the government sanctioned shipment of surplus wheat to Egypt in an arrangement that accepted the Egyptian blacklist of ships that traded with Israel. His explanation was that the United States has no control over the selection of ships, except for the requirement under the Cargo Preference Act that 50 percent of surplus commodities must be shipped aboard American vessels.
The Department of Agriculture, meanwhile, announced that additional wheat has been made available to Egypt. Egypt was authorized $8,235,000 worth of wheat, approximately 4,500,000 bushels, under the expanded agreement. The Department made known that Egypt would be included in a new program to expand U. S. wheat and wheat product exports.
