Dr. Herbert Schoenfeldt, representative in Germany of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, died here. He was 61. Funeral services will be held in Bonn tomorrow.
Dr. Schoenfeldt, who had served with the Jewish Restitution Successor Organization since its inception in 1948, went to Bonn as a representative of the Claims Conference in 1951. Earlier, he had served as an attorney with the American War Crimes Commission Born in Germany, he had fled the Nazis and come to the United States in 1938. Dr. Schoenfeldt was instrumental in obtaining the passage of the latest revision of the Federal Indemnification Law.
(In New York the Claims Conference also issued a statement on its representative’s passing. The statement said: “The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany notes with deep sorrow the passing of Dr. Herbert Schoenfeldt, representative of the Claims Conference in Germany. Dr. Schoenfeldt was the able spokesman for the victims of Nazi persecution and made many inestimable contributions towards securing benefits for them. His passing will be mourned by all who had occasion to work with him both here and abroad.”)
