Jewish leadership throughout Europe is becoming increasingly aware of “the need for Jewish spiritual and cultural survival,” now that the problem of Jewish” physical survival is being solved,” Charles Jordan, director-general of the Joint Distribution Committee, declared here today. Mr. Jordan made his statement in conjunction with a call issued to Jewish educators in 12 European countries to attend a Jewish educational conference here, October 8-10.
The JDC, Mr. Jordan said, has spent $16,500,000 since the end of World War II for Jewish educational projects. “Gratifying progress, “he declared has been made toward meeting the physical needs of the Jews in Western Europe. However, he continued, Jewish leadership is “deeply concerned” now with the problems of spiritual and cultural survival. For that reason, Mr. Jordan stated, the coming conference was called to provide the opportunity for discussion, guidance and planning.
