British newspapers reported from Washington today that Egyptian purchases of heavy arms from the Communist countries already exceed $250, 000, 000 and may reach $300, 000, 000 under the impulsion of Egyptian President Nasser’s desire for faster deliveries.
The Washington correspondent of The Times remarked that months ago Secretary of State Dulles was speaking of “second-hand arms” and of time needed to determine their potential effectiveness. He remarked that assessment “has never emerged, though present reports talk of aircraft, tanks and artillery being among the deliveries unloaded at Egyptian ports by at least one Communist vessel weekly.”
Reports from Cairo today quoted Maj. Ibrahim Tahawy, secretary-general of the “Liberation Rally” organization, as telling Liberation Army recruits that “the struggle between us and imperialism will not be over until we wipe out Israel from the face of the earth and establish an Arab State in its place.”
