Secretary of State John Foster Dulles has assured Israel’s Ambassador in Washington, Abba S. Eban, that the principle of complete freedom of passage for ships of all nations through the Suez Canal without any discrimination still guides United States policy.
Israeli sources here indicated today that position was explained to Mr. Eban yesterday when the Ambassador conferred with Mr. Dulles. The Secretary is understood to have made it clear that his current policy includes a firm adherence to the principle of complete universality and non-discrimination in the use of the canal by all nations, without exception.
Ambassador Eban, chairman of the Israel delegation to the United Nations, conferred for over an hour today with Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold. Mr. Eban said after the conference that the talks concerned “many matters, including the Suez.” Asked whether he had made any proposals to Mr. Hammarskjold in regard to the Suez Canal situation, Mr. Eban said: “Our position on the Suez Canal is well known. We are against discrimination.”
