Britain is the only great power whose government has not said in the past few days that the right of free passage through the Suez Canal should apply to Israel ships and cargo, the Manchester Guardian noted today.

The paper asserted that this point must ultimately be considered in any negotiations even if it is not the foremost matter for discussion. The paper described it as “probably the thorniest of many uncomfortable problems which remain to be settled.–In the interests of making progress, it is probably best left until a late stage in the negotiations; but it cannot be overlooked and it would be good to know that the Government’s view has not changed.”
