Israel gave Britain assurances on October 29 that it would not attack the Kingdom of Jordan, W. D. Ormsby-Gore, the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, disclosed in Parliament today. Asked by Philip Noel-Baker, a Laborite what reply Britain had given the Israelis to these assurances, the Government spokesman replied, “none.”
Mr. Ormsby-Gore told the Commons in a written reply that for some time prior to the Israel action in the Sinai Peninsula, the British Government had held the view that the Tripartite Declaration was not applicable in Egypt’s defense. He said this view was stated in the course of meetings with the representatives of the United States and France on October 29 and “there was general agreement with this view.”
