Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden, addressing a private meeting of Conservative members of Parliament last night, strongly defended his view that but for the Anglo-French intervention in the Middle East, Israel’s attack on Egypt would have had a chain reaction which would have engulfed the whole Middle East in a general war with far worse consequences than any yet experienced.
