Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the Jewish Agency and the World Jewish Congress, was received today in separate audiences by Argentine President Gen. Pedro Aramburo and Vice President Rear Admiral Isaac Rojas. He thanked both men for Argentina’s support of Israel and for the fact that Argentine Jews enjoyed full equality and freedom.
Later, at a luncheon given in his honor by Mark Turkow, director of the WJC South American office, Dr. Goldmann reported that North African Moslem leaders had kept their pledges to the World Congress not to mistreat Jews and to give them treatment equal to that received by Moslem citizens. The situation of the Egyptian Jewish community, he said, was a serious problem. He charged that the United Nations had “not lifted a finger” to help the situation. He reported that many sums taken from Jewish institutions had been returned by the Nasser regime.
H told his audience that the WJC had decided to give full publicity to the situation of 3,500,000 Jews in East European countries. He said that world Jewry was taking heart from signs that Jews in the Communist countries were really Jews at heart and that the youth, more than the older generation — because of its disillusionment with Stalinism — was strongly Jewish.
