Orthodox Jews in the United States were urged at the convention of the Rabbinical Council of America today to spend an additional $25,000,000 next year to strengthen Jewish education on all levels.
The recommendation was made by Dr. Joseph Kaminetsky, executive director of the National Society for Hebrew Day Schools. He reported that American Orthodox Jews have been spending $25,000,000 annually for the furtherance of Jewish education.
Rabbi Solomon H. Sharfman, president of the Rabbinical Council of America, asserted last night that “virtually all American Jews” will in the next 50 years “be associated with Jewish religious life, particularly with synagogue dynamics and religious community affairs.” Speaking at the opening of the four-day convention of the council, which represents Orthodox rabbis, he warned that the synagogue “must not be used merely as a social center for purely fraternal or pleasurable purposes.”
“The Jewish collectivity,” he continued, “will be so well organized in the year 2000 that its vast network of schools, seminaries, hospitals, social agencies and philanthropic organizations will be able to cater to the needs of both American and foreign Jewish communities.”
