Baron Maurice de Rothschild, 76,died yesterday after a long illness, leaving his only son and sole survivor, Baron Edmond de Rothschild who is the sole heir to the family fortune, estimated at $252,000,000.

Baron Maurice de Rothschild was rarely active in business, preferring his interests in paintings and politics. He served in the French Senate for a number of years, In 1940, when the Vichy Government came to power, his paintings and his stable of horses were confiscated and sold. The Baron went to Scotland and proceeded from there to the U.S. He returned to Europe in 1946, following the liberation of France from the Nazis.
