The American basketball team beat an Israeli five yesterday to take the basketball championship of the fifth World Maccabiah Games here. The score was 79 to 62. The Israeli team was previously undefeated.
The Israeli swimming team took the championship in that division, edging out the American and South African squads which were tied one and one-half points behind the Israelis. The only American gold medal winner yesterday was Rina Mendelson, a woman’s diving champion. Mike Wolk, another American, received a bronze medal for coming in third in the 100 meter free style; he had previously won two gold and one silver medal in other races. Byron Krieger, an Olympic champion from Detroit, placed first in the saber competition.
