State Department spokesman Lincoln White made known today that the United States Government has been receiving reports since sometime in September of the movement of Egyptian military forces into Syria. The United States, he said, was following the matter with interest.

According to word received here, Egyptian strength in Syria includes a reinforced battalion numbering between 1,000 and 1,600 officers and men. Also, an undetermined number of “volunteer” technicians and specialists belonging to the Egyptian armed forces have been arriving in Syria.

Government sources said, meanwhile, that top officials were following developments closely and that Secretary of State Dulles is expected to consider the matter as a priority question on his return. He is expected back in Washington tonight. The same sources also said the U.S. had no information on reports the Lebanon sought to sever its Eisenhower Doctrine ties.
